Carey Olsen's Sheba Raza named Co Vice-Chair of The Bermuda Society.

Press release from Carey Olsen on Wednesday 8 July, 2020.

Carey Olsen corporate lawyer Sheba Raza has been appointed Co Vice-Chair of The Bermuda Society.

Established in 1987, The Bermuda Society is a non-profit organisation which focuses on promoting and strengthening business and cultural links between Bermuda, the City of London and other international finance centres. Membership of the Society includes most of the principal British companies investing and doing business in Bermuda, leading Bermudian companies active in the UK and individuals who wish to support the Society directly.

Having been a board member of the Society since December 2015, Sheba will be sharing her responsibilities as Co Vice-Chair with George Fergusson, Governor of Bermuda from 2012-2016 and esteemed former diplomat.

Working with the newly appointed Chairman, Robert Bisset, her Co Vice-Chair and other members of the Management Committee of The Bermuda Society, Sheba will be seeking to develop initiatives and to host events working with politicians, business leaders and other stakeholders to promote Bermuda's reputation and strengths as a  key international finance centre, to engage with and provide networking opportunities for Bermudians in Bermuda and London and to also support local cultural and social programs.

Commenting on her appointment, Sheba said: "It is an honour to be appointed Co Vice-Chair and, together with George and the Management Committee, I am looking forward to working with the Society's membership and alongside the Bermuda Business Development Authority to support Bermuda's efforts as it navigates its way out of the coronavirus pandemic."

Carey Olsen is a gold corporate member of The Bermuda Society, providing valuable support to the Society from both its London and Bermuda offices.

Commenting on Sheba's appointment, Carey Olsen Bermuda managing partner Michael Hanson said: "We are delighted with Sheba's appointment which coincides with our drive to expand and enhance Bermuda's reputation as one of the preeminent offshore jurisdictions. With the disrupted world we now live in, both London and the wider European market are key growth areas for us and we very much appreciate and support the Bermuda Society's work in this regard."

Sheba, who joined Carey Olsen at the beginning of June, is the first Bermuda-qualified lawyer to be based in the firm's London office. Her arrival represented the firm's continuing expansion of Bermuda law services and also means Carey Olsen is the only offshore law firm in London supporting clients with on-the-ground legal advice on the laws of Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey and Jersey.
