Gibraltar raised in House of Lords debate on Crown Dependencies

The issue of Gibraltar was raised in a debate in the House of Lords on the Crown Dependencies in the context of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, reports gbc.

Although mainly focused on the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, Labour’s Lord Foulkes steered the debate towards Gibraltar, asking for a guarantee that EU funding would be made up by the UK Government after Brexit.

In response, Baroness Goldie, who was leader of the Scottish Conservatives between 2005 and 2011, accused Lord Foulkes of making mischief. She said the issue was a substantive one and wide of the topic under debate. However, she said that was not to diminish the importance of the overseas territories, prominent among those being Gibraltar. Baroness Goldie assured the House that close discussions continued and the interests of the OT’s were very much in the minds of the negotiators.
